What is a Home Energy Assessment?

A home energy assessment, also known as energy audit, is the first step toward making your home more comfortable and efficient.

During the assessment, we take a close look at how your home uses energy — checking for air leaks, insulation levels, and overall efficiency.

Once we gather this information, we can recommend upgrades that make the biggest impact for your home. The audit also gives us a starting point so we can measure how much energy (and money) you’ll save after improvements are made.

What to Expect?

At Simply Home Performance, we take a “whole house” approach to energy efficiency. We look at how your home is heated, how well it retains that heat through insulation and air sealing, how electricity is used, and even your daily household activity.

A typical home energy assessment lasts about 1–2 hours and helps pinpoint areas where improvements can be made to increase comfort, safety, and energy savings.

During the visit, our energy advisor will inspect your home’s mechanical systems and appliances, as well as key areas like the attic, basement, crawlspaces, or mobile home belly. We’ll measure, photograph, and document these areas to meet NYSERDA program requirements and to design the most effective upgrade plan for your home. We’ll also perform a blower door test to determine how sealed or drafty your home is.

It’s a quick process (typically 1–3 hours) and minimally invasive, with no mess or disruption.
It provides us with the detailed information needed to create a comprehensive plan for making your home more energy efficient.
It’s a required step by NYSERDA before participating in any of New York State’s energy efficiency or assistance programs, which help homeowners afford upgrades that lower utility costs.
